20 Stylish Ways to Make the Most of Your Small Closet, According to Designers

Introduction

A small closet doesn't need to be a deal-breaker for a fabulous, organized wardrobe. While it might seem like there's never enough room for all your clothing and accessories, there are plenty of clever solutions to help you make the most of every inch.

As an interior designer, one main challenge I often encounter is how to maximize small storage spaces without compromising aesthetic appeal. The advice in this blog is based on tried-and-true methods both I and my fellow designers swear by when it comes to small closet organization.

These 20 tips, curated by top-notch designers, are stylish, innovative and effective in making your small closet feel larger than life. By taking advantage of every nook and cranny, these solutions will help bring order to your serves of apparel, footwear, and accessories, while also adding a pop of style to your space.

1. Double Your Hanging Space

No matter how small the closet is, increasing hanger capacity is one smart way to make more space for your clothes. One trick that veterans swear by is the installation of double hanging rods. This not only provides plain extra room but ensures that items are neatly arranged and easily accessible.

This idea works fantastic for separate kinds of clothing as well. It's best effective for shorter items like skirts, shirts and folded trousers. Below this, you could hang longer items such as dresses, full suits, long coats, among others.

The beauty of this solution is that it is customizable according to height and width. Hence, it will work fine for any kind of closet irrespective of layout and dimension, thereby creating tiers of storage space.

  • Use adjustable double rods to suit different clothing lengths.
  • Group similar clothing together for easy access (skirts with skirts, jeans with jeans, etc.).
  • Keep frequently worn clothes at eye level.
  • Reserve the top rod for seasonal or less-frequently used items.
  • Try a pull-down hanging rod for extra convenience.
  • Combine this tactic with thin hangers to maximize space.

2. Utilize the Closet Door

If the door of your closet swings open rather than slides, you are in luck, as that is additional real estate for storage. Don't let the inside of your closet door go unused; make it work with hooks, hanging racks, or even pegboards.

An over-the-door shoe organizer is an efficient way to store footwear without taking up valuable rod or shelf space. You could also use these pockets to stash small accessories like scarves, belts, or hats.

Another easy trick is to install a simple hook or two on the inside of your closet door. Beneath these hooks, you can hang anything from bags and coats to scarves and jewelry – just organize smartly and ensure it doesn't obstruct when closing the door.

  • Experiment with various organizers such as hooks, hanging racks, or over-the-door storage solutions.
  • Classify items by type and frequency of use.
  • Remember not to overcrowd the door – balance is key.
  • If using hooks, add stoppers to prevent items from falling off.
  • Consider a full-length mirror on the outside of the door to save space elsewhere in the room.
  • Be mindful of the storage weight limit to preserve the door integrity.

3. Opt for Vertical Storage

One often neglected region of a closet is the vertical dimension. Many people forget to use the entire height of the closet, which amounts to a generous portion of available storage space.

Vertical organizers, whether they're hanging or standing racks, cubbies, stackable bins, or shelves, can be total game-changers in maximizing closet potential. They are perfect for storing bulkier items like sweaters that don't hang well or shoes which need their own homes.

The high-end region of your closet is also a fantastic spot to park lesser-used or seasonal pieces. Just ensure you reach out for a ladder or a high-reach garment hook for complete ease when fetching these items!

  • Add shelf dividers to keep everything from toppling over.
  • Leverage wire baskets for visibility and easy access.
  • Batch store similar items together for greater convenience.
  • Vacuum-sealed bags can free up significant space.
  • A label machine can do wonders for organization and quick retrieval.
  • Never overlook the importance of maintaining tidiness – it impacts usability.
