UC Berkeley Class of 1980 Masayoshi Son is a Japanese business magnate and the founder and current chief executive officer of SoftBank. He is one of the richest people in Japan with a net worth of $20.6 billion. He is also the founder of the Vision Fund, the world's largest technology investment fund. After graduating from UC, Berkeley, Son founded SoftBank, an early distributor of PC software in Japan, in 1981. SoftBank soon became a major force in the Japanese tech industry. In 1995, Son made a risky bet on the then-unproven internet by investing $20 million in Yahoo! Japan. That investment would go on to be worth billions. In 2000, Son took SoftBank public, making himself and many of his employees instant billionaires. He used his newfound wealth to make audacious bets on a number of tech companies, including Alibaba, which would go on to become China's largest e-commerce company.
